By Natalie Martino Volunteer Writer, Volunteering Queensland Inc August 2001 The Miles Theatre Restaurant started as a bi-annual event 12 years ago that formed part of the community's "Back to the Bush" spring celebrations. Due to popular demand however, the event's organisers, The Miles Regional Arts Council, has staged the event annually for the past 4 years to growing numbers of enthusiastic locals and visitors. Volunteers not only help with the organisation and running of the event, they star in it. The local talent, from school children to the mayor, is sourced from properties, businesses and households throughout the Murilla Shire. Volunteers play vital behind-the-scenes roles too; making costumes, props and sets; selling tickets; tending the bar; ushering the crowds; and waiting on the guests. Over 50 volunteers are involved with the event. The performances are an annual highlight for the community, and according to spokeswoman Stacey Daveson, "The whole experience exudes a sense of community worth and pride in local achievement." In 2001, the Restaurant presented the classic Australian play, On Our Selection, in the Miles Historical Village over 7th to 9th September. The production and setting were chosen specifically "to help the community reflect upon the Centenary of Federation," Stacey says. These events are testament to the work of all those dedicated volunteers, and it's a great night out too! |
